What Do You See in an Escape Room?

What Do You See in an Escape Room?

If you are thinking of booking an escape room game with your friends, family, or colleagues, then you need to be well-informed about what is expected of you.

Are you wondering, what do you see in an escape room?

Well, we will explain how the process works, so you know exactly what will happen during your escape room experience.

What is an escape room?

An escape room is an indoor leisure activity which requires at least two players, but it is more fun if played with a group. The players must work together to solve challenges, clues and riddles, in order to escape from the room, within an allocated time slot (usually 60 minutes).

The beauty of escape rooms is that they are notoriously difficult to solve: the average failure rate for escape rooms is about 70%, which means only 30% of teams will successfully escape from the room.

Escape rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are as short as 30 minutes, whereas one of the longest escape rooms in the world is the escape house Paradox Project in Greece. This is a real 120m² home at a neoclassical building, with multiple rooms, secret passages, and hidden mysteries, which takes a couple of hours to complete!

What do you see in an escape room?

So, what do you see in an escape room?

Once you enter the escape room, you and your teammates will be left to your own devices. Usually, the room will be small and dark, with poor lighting. Alternatively, there may be other elements such as UV lighting, flashing lights and smoke machines.

Depending on the size of the escape room, there may be multiple rooms for you to work through or just one room.

The room will be designed and decorated in accordance with the theme: whether that’s horror, fantasy, magic, science, spy missions, technology, and so on.

There will be challenges, puzzles, and riddles for you to complete, in order to solve your way out of the escape room.

You and your teammates will have to use your logic, problem-solving skills, communication and creativity to solve these mysteries. To assist you, there will be clues and props which are hidden throughout the room, so you will have to search for these and work together to crack the codes!

To get you started, you will be given a set of instructions- this can be written on a piece of paper, inscribed on a prop, or displayed on a projector screen.

There will also be a clock or timer, which is counting down the minutes you have left to solve the mystery and escape from the room. Your time slot will usually be 60 minutes.

If you successfully complete each challenge, you will win the game!

If you don’t solve all the challenges in your time slot, then you lose the game!

Is the door locked in escape rooms?

No, for health and safety purposes, the door is never physically locked in escape rooms.

You will always be able to exit the room if you need to if you don’t want to play any more, or if you need to leave in an emergency.

You are allowed to take a toilet break during your game. Simply inform the Game master that you wish to use the bathroom, and they will let you out of the room.

However, do so at your own risk, because you may not be allowed back into the game room. You will have to wait for your team members to continue the game, without you.

That is why we always advise our guests to visit the bathroom before they enter the escape room, so they can maximise their time inside and not abandon their teammates!

What makes an escape room scary?

Not all escape rooms are designed to give you a fright!

There are many escape rooms which do not use any scary elements, so all you have to do is complete the puzzles and solve the riddles.

However, many players seem to find escape rooms a little bit scary, even if there are no horror elements!

Here are a couple of reasons why:

  • The darkness and eerie atmosphere

The dark environment of an escape room is chilling enough to put a tingle in anybody’s spine!

Most escape rooms are deliberately dark, to heighten the suspense, add to the storyline, and make it more difficult for players to locate the clues.

If you have nyctophobia (extreme fear of the dark), then we do not recommend visiting an escape room. The darkness varies between each escape room: some are near pitch-black, while others just have poor lighting.

  • If it’s a horror or Halloween-themed escape room

If you enjoy paranormal mysteries, jump scares, and villainous characters, then we recommend visiting a horror-themed escape room. That will be packed full of frights and surprises, so you are in for a terrifying night…

  • The time pressure

What could be more intense than having to complete multiple challenges under timed conditions? It’s worse than taking an exam at school!

Many players walk into the escape room feeling confident that they can solve the mystery, but alas! The time runs out faster than you would expect, which makes the time crunch even more intimidating!
