Choosing the perfect escape room

Let’s back up a moment because before you think about what to do when you first enter the room you need to make sure you pick the perfect escape room that’s right for you.

The first thing to do is to plan your escape room experience and that means choosing an escape room. Is crime your thing? Do you prefer something a little scary? Every escape room is different and there are so many to choose from.

Each room has a different story and theme behind it so choose one that piques your interest. Also, consider the escape room difficulty level. If this is your first attempt, choose a room that has a low difficulty rating, or, if you want to dive straight in with a challenge, choose a high difficulty rated room.

We currently have three rooms available. Sherlock’s Secret is a difficult room to conquer, whereas Haunted Hollow and Getaway have a medium difficulty rating. We recommend starting with either of the two easier rooms if it’s your first visit. Here’s an overview of each of the rooms.

Sherlock’s Secret

In a city that breathes uncertainty, a gloom lures over 221B Baker St as Sherlock Holmes has been abducted by the very killer he was chasing. What possibly could have happened? To find Mr Holmes we are recruiting only the best detectives in the city to solve the mystery and find him before it’s too late. The odds are against you and time is running out, can you find Mr Holmes?

Haunted Hollow

Ten years ago, Mr Hollowhill vanished without a trace, leaving only his ramshackle house behind. Though his disappearance was suspicious, the case eventually went cold. Do you have what it takes to enter the Haunted Hollow?

The Getaway

The notorious car theft ring called Matric Clan is currently embroiled in a brutal mafia war which has led to you and your car enthusiast friends recklessly being taken hostage in the chop shop at an unknown location. Can you escape in time?

Select your teammates

The next thing you’ll need to do is select your team. Choose a team that you’re not only going to have fun with (because an escape room is supposed to be enjoyable after all) but also people that you know are going to work well as a team. Remember that escape rooms are designed to be a challenging team activity so choose people who are up for the challenge.

What age are escape rooms for? Some escape rooms are suitable for families with children, but not all of them are. Some themes and stories behind many escape rooms are inappropriate for children. Escape rooms don’t necessarily have a specific target age group as they’re open to everyone but they’re most popular amongst 15-25. That being said, anyone can do an escape room, from groups of friends and family members or for corporate team building events.

Choosing the right number of people for your team is also something to consider. Many people think escape rooms are easier with less people but this depends on who you have in your team and what skills they have. The ideal number for an escape room is anything between 2 and 6 players. You don’t want to do an escape room on your own and more than 6 will make it too crowded and not everyone will get to take part.

Increase your chance of winning!

Here’s where things get juicy and our top tips on how to beat the escape room. You might be surprised to learn that the percentage of people that succeed is only 15-30% so having a clear plan in mind is crucial to your success.

Before going into an escape room, gather your team and discuss strategies to win. Here is a list of things that we recommend you do, including what to look for first when you enter the escape room.

  • Choose the right people and play to their strengths
  • Familiarise yourselves with the rules beforehand
  • Make sure you are clear on the theme and backstory of the room
  • Decide what role each player will have, for example: a timekeeper, a team leader, the numbers person, the riddle solver etc
  • Make the most of every second in the room and don’t waste any time
  • Eat before you arrive so you’re full and ready to go!
  • Arrive in good time so you aren’t stressed and flustered when you arrive
  • Treat everything in the room as a clue or a puzzle to be solved
  • Don’t get stressed after all, this is meant to be a fun experience and you can always go back and try again.

What do you do when you first enter an escape room?

Every escape room has a time limit, usually 1 hour, so you need to make the most of your time. Every second counts in an escape room and the first minute is the most important. When you first enter an escape room spread out and look at everything… and we really mean everything.

Everything and anything in the room can be a clue and the more ground covered in the first minute or so will give you a better chance of understanding what it is that you need to do to solve the room and escape so that you and your gang can leave victorious!

Enjoy your escape room experience!

Now you have your escape room booked and your teammates selected, the big day has arrived and you’re all set to go so above all else, make sure you enjoy it!

Before arriving at your escape room experience, make sure you put on some comfortable clothes and have some food with your teammates to discuss tactics.

Once you arrive at your escape room, you will be greeted by a member of staff who will go sign you in, and make you aware of the rules. You will then be shown a video or be given the backstory of your room. It is important that you pay attention to the rules, not just for the game but for health and safety.

Take in every bit of the backstory and listen out for what the end goal is. Do you need to find something before the time runs out? Do you need to solve clues and puzzles to work out a password? Or, maybe you need to find out who committed a crime by investigating the evidence.

People who haven’t done one before wonder why escape rooms are so popular. This is because it’s an opportunity to get together with your friends, family and work colleagues to do something a little different. Escape rooms are a thrilling experience and something you will remember for a long time to come. Once you have done one you will want to do them all.

So, what are you waiting for? Choose one of our escape rooms today and assemble your team.

To conclude, when you first enter an escape room make sure you split up to cover more ground, look at everything and make the most of every second. Enjoy!
