Escape Room Difficulty: How Do I Choose The Right Room?
Have you ever wanted to do an escape room but you aren’t sure which room to choose? Well fear not, we’re here to help you decide. At Escape Now we have several rooms to choose from with different difficulty levels and in this post, we have some tips on how to choose the best room for your team and how to get the most out of your experience.
Tell me more about escape rooms
An escape room is a challenge-based activity in which you and your team are locked within a room or several rooms, and have to solve various puzzles in time in order to escape. If you escape in the given time frame then you and your team will have won the challenge.
Escape rooms started as Live Action Role Playing or LARPing, which is an experience during which players role-play as characters from games or historical events. They also have origins in online escape room-type games, where players solve puzzles and escape out of a virtual room from the comfort of their own homes. Escape rooms also take inspiration from traditional scavenger or treasure hunts and interactive theatres such as haunted houses or murder mystery dinner shows.
In most, there are areas to sit down in an escape room so you can have a break, solve a puzzle or think through a riddle so you don’t need to worry about being on your feet the whole time if you don’t want to be. Escape rooms aren’t necessarily strenuous activities but they can be mentally challenging.
Is every escape room different?
Yes! Every escape room is unique so whichever facility you choose to go to, there will be different rooms. At Escape Now we currently have 3 different rooms to choose from and they are unique to other escape rooms you will find.
Escape rooms are all the same concept in that there is a space you have to try to get out of within a given time frame. To get out, you must solve puzzles and clues but it is the delivery of this concept that is unique to every room. The settings, scenarios and story that you follow will be unique to each escape room you visit. Within the room, each has their own difficulty level and unique set of challenges and in that sense, they are all different.
Choosing an escape room
There are several factors to consider before choosing the escape room such as:
- Have you ever done an escape room before?
- How many players do you have?
- What skills do your teammates have?
- What theme would you like to do?
- How difficult do you want your room to be?
The difficulty level of the escape room
Choosing an escape room can either be completely random or by strategic choice. For those looking to ease themselves into an escape room, or if you have a small number of players, choose a room with low difficulty. If you are an avid escape room goer or you and your friends fancy a challenge, go for something a little harder.
Just remember that the percentage of people who succeed is relatively low at only 15-30% because they are designed to be challenging. If you’re a newbie, it’s probably best to start with an easier room to get some experience before trying the more difficult ones. To give you and your team the best chance of beating the room have a look at our top 5 strategies for winning.
The ideal number of players for an escape room
You can play an escape room with 2-6 players. You don’t want to play an escape room on your own and having too many players can ruin the experience. Can 2 people beat an escape room? Of course! Even though having more people can sometimes mean a better chance of beating the room, it doesn’t necessarily mean this is the case every time.
It’s more about using the skills that you and your teammates have and working together to solve the puzzles and riddles. If you have a team of 6 people with no strategy that aren’t working together, vs. a team of 2 people who are, then the team of 2 is more likely to succeed. Consider the number of people in your team but also the skills you all have when deciding on a room.
Choosing a theme for an escape room
Choosing an escape room is important because the room will determine your whole experience. Escape rooms not only have different difficulty levels but they have different themes too. Consider the group you will be taking with you, for example, will you have children in your team? Is this for a corporate team building even and do you want a specific theme to coincide with your overall goal?
Some escape rooms have a haunted house, a ghostly feel to them, whilst others are more mysterious or adventurous. Some that are suitable for children may have a pirate, fairytail or science theme.
At Escape Now, we have different challenges guaranteed to get you thinking! Here are some of the rooms that we offer at the moment as well as details about their difficulty level and theme.
Sherlock’s Secret (Difficult)
In the city that breathes uncertainty, a gloom lures over 221B Baker St as Sherlock Holmes has been abducted by the very killer he was chasing. What could possibly have happened? To find Mr Holmes, we are recruiting only the best detective in the city to solve the mystery and find Mr Holmes before it’s too late. The offs are against you and time is running out, can you find Mr Holmes in time?
A serial murderer is on the loose, and Holmes and Watson have been on the case. In typical fashion, however, Holmes was struck with a breakthrough deduction and ran off. Thinking Holmes had simply solved the case and home, Watson followed shortly behind. But when he arrived, there was no trace of Holmes- only a note left on the desk, written in the same strange code the killed had been leaving at the scenes of the crimes.
Unable to solve the case himself, Watson recruited a top team of forensic investigators to assemble at 221B Bake St, solve the case before time runs out and save Sherlock from the sadistic killer.
Haunted Hollow (Medium)
Ten years ago, Mr Hollowhill vanished without a trace, leaving only his ramshackle house behind. Though his disappearance was suspicious, the case eventually went cold. Recently, however, the house was seized by the bank, auctioned and bought at a steal by the investors only wishing to sell it.
Knowing nothing of the house’s troubles history, the renovators believe this to be a simple job, but they don’t know what they’re in for. This house holds many more secrets than first thought, and some of them are deadly. Just who was Mr. Hollowfill? Where did he go? Dare to enter?
As you can see from the themes here it’s no wonder why escape rooms are so popular amongst family and friend days out, corporate events or tourists.
